What to Avoid:
Firstly, there are specific options to be avoided at all costs. Both bleach and hydrogen peroxide, for example, can damage your car's upholstery. Another group to avoid are cleaners with an ammonia base. These can cause damage to your touch screens by removing their anti-glare and anti-fingerprint coating. Furthermore, don't use anything abrasive when cleaning a touchscreen device. This includes paper towels or tissues. Lastly, use common sense. Don't treat all surfaces equally.
What You Should Do to Clean Your Car for Coronavirus:
Most importantly, wear gloves when cleaning and disinfecting your car. The CDC suggests the following:
"Gloves and any other disposable PPE used for cleaning and disinfecting the vehicle should be removed and disposed of after cleaning; wash hands immediately after removal of gloves and PPE with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available."cdc.gov
Apply Alcohol Cleaners
The CDC suggests using alcohol cleaners of 70% alcohol is most effective. Not only does Alcohol kill Covid-19, but it is car friendly. Just keep it away from the leather upholstery. Most leather seats have a protective layer, but if you don't know the specifications, it's much better to be safe rather than sorry.
A Soap & Water Treatment
Another great option that works on many surfaces, including leather, is a basic mix of water and soap. Just don't scrub too fervently, or get the fabrics too wet.
Microfiber Towels or 100% Cotton T-Shirts
In general, microfiber towels and/or old cotton t-shirts are a great all-surface solution that can be applied just about anywhere.
A Word About Leather Seats and Surfaces
Notwithstanding that we've mentioned leather more than a few times above, it's worth repeating again. Avoid hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, bleach, and ammonia-based cleaners. Leather-specific disinfecting wipes are best, but a damp cloth with soap and water is likely to do the trick.
Stopping the Spread of Covid-19
Of course, the strongest solution to stop community spread is to just stay home and not share a vehicle. If you must, however, share a car, get service, drive a rental, or transport others, then regular cleaning is the most effective method to ensure the safety of yourself and others.
